It’s often said that graphics don’t matter. Gameplay is everything.
Nonsense, we say. Video games are an inherently visual medium, and graphics are an integral part of their appeal.

Just because a game looks good doesn’t mean it’s going to play well, of course. And the same is true the other way – we’ve played loads of brilliant ‘ugly’ games in our time.

But to downplay the importance of graphics would be silly. A good game will pick the right graphical style to sell its world, immersing you more fully in the experience.

Still, you’d be hard pushed to define the term ‘good graphics’. Are you after photorealistic realism? Or something a little more artistic and experimental?

The following list reflects this diversity. We’ve got stunningly convincing racers, beautifully expressive platformers, puzzlers that look like they belong in a modern art gallery, and much more besides.

They’re joined together by one principle: they all make our eyes happy. We love looking at them.
