Gloom: Digital Edition (2020)
Developer: Sky Ship Studios
Genre: Card/board game, Strategy
Gloom is a card-based game where you basically need to ruin the life of your family, without actually killing them, but getting as close to that as you actually can. It’s a strange game that is somehow super fun, despite the fact that you are literally taking away opportunities, bringing illnesses to people, and generally hurting them. You basically just play modifier cards on your family, which will give them negative self worth points. You can also play positive cards on other families you are battling against, giving them more self worth and thus becoming less sad. It’s a dark-humor filled game worth checking out.
There have been so many solitaire themed games that have come out this year, especially in the video game space. One of the newer and more polished games to hit the mobile space specifically is Gnomitaire, a quick fire card game where you essentially are trying to beat a slightly angry gnome. There are several different gameplay modes, however, the gist of each mode is basically the same; you get 16 randomly generated cards that then need to be divided into four columns at the top of the screen, by laying cards that match other cards types on top of them. It’s a simple game to play, but challenging to master.
Root is a game that tabletop enthusiasts talk about from time to time – and it has finally made it’s way to the mobile world! This strategic board game puts you in a woodland, where you must pick an animal (each with their own different goals and playing styles) before you start taking over the land, building various different machines, and fighting other factions so that you can be the dominant animal in the world. This game looks cute, but is very challenging and there is a lot of card management and thinking through moves if you want to master Root!
The Game of Life 2
The Game of Life 2 is a classic family board game that seems to be in every house I have ever been in, while living in America. It’s a game about living a dream life, balancing work, university, life and making decisions (as well as dealing with random events) in hopes of having a life that leads you to the most points. There is a colorful spinner, loads of maps, and lots of ways to earn money and points in the digital version of the game. Oh, and cutscenes, which are pretty cool.
Sagrada is a colorful dice-based game where you need to roll dice, then place them into a beautiful stained glass window, finding the perfect place for your dice. There are a lot of restrictions to your window, from the number on the dice to the color, so finding the perfect place to make the window the best it can be is a challenge, but you do have tools that will help you shape the dice that you have, in hopes of helping you come up with a great design.
